The story of this project

About Mesh Tech

Mesh Tech Australia, is a family-owned company born from a passion for precision metalwork. Specialising in perforated metal sheets and bespoke panels, their work balances art, architecture, and engineering.

They're meticulous, locally grounded, and deeply committed to delivering high-quality products with fast turnaround. Their goal? To become Australia's most trusted perforated metal supplier. Working with them meant joining a team that values problem-solving, creativity, and above all, craft.

About the Project

The brief was as ambitious as it was exciting: create an ecommerce platform that reflected Mesh Tech's exacting standards while supporting a dual audience - trade professionals and retail customers. With products and collections still in development, we had to design a structure flexible enough to accommodate custom orders and evolving product ranges.

Together with Brent and project lead Louise, we navigated complex product variables, aligned taxonomy, and built a system that could grow with the business and integrate with their lean manufacturing processes. The challenge was technical and creative in equal measure, and the process was collaborative, iterative, and deeply satisfying.

Considerations & solutions

Starting Point:

Mesh Tech was essentially a concept in development. Products, collections, and production systems were still being designed, which meant the website had to evolve alongside the business.

Our Approach:

We took a technical-first approach, building the functional framework of the ecommerce platform before refining design elements. Close collaboration with Louise produced detailed spreadsheets capturing product variables, allowing the website taxonomy and ecommerce fields to be mapped accurately from the outset.

This approach ensured concurrent development across the team, with regular check-ins to test and recalibrate where needed. Rather than waiting for perfect clarity, we built flexibility into the foundation and grew from there.

Collaboration

My collaborative team included Patrick Jackson from KPS Systems, bringing valued knowledge in ecommerce systems and SEO expertise. Working with Brent and Louise was highly collaborative and iterative - the team dynamic balanced technical precision with creative design decisions. Allie MacCulloch of James and Lenny created a wonderful foundation with logo and brand guideline.

Key breakthrough moments included structuring the ecommerce taxonomy and designing product detail pages that could accommodate future growth and custom orders. Every decision was tested against both user needs and business requirements.

Design & functional approach

Architectural Poetry in Design:

  • Functional precision first - the site needed to handle complex product variations with clarity
  • Dual-audience focus with intuitive pathways for both trade and retail users
  • Visual alignment with the brand's craftsmanship through sleek, clean, professional aesthetics

Standout Moments:

The custom-built product taxonomy that mirrored internal spreadsheets was a game-changer, enabling accurate and flexible product configuration. We also created clear visual pathways that guide different audiences without compromising design elegance - trade users can dive straight into specifications while retail customers are inspired by possibilities.

Outcome & Impact

The result is an ecommerce experience that feels as precise and polished as the metalwork it represents. Trade customers enjoy seamless ordering processes, while retail visitors are guided through a showcase of products and inspiration for their projects.

The website captures Mesh Tech's identity - highlighting craftsmanship, innovation, and reliability. Client feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, praising both usability and visual clarity. Most importantly, the platform grows with the business, accommodating new products and custom requirements as they evolve.

Reflections

This project reinforced the power of aligning technical functionality with design storytelling. It sharpened skills in taxonomy mapping, dual-audience UX, and technical-first project planning, all while maintaining a collaborative and creative partnership.

Most importantly, it transformed a highly technical business into an inviting, customer-centered online experience that celebrates the artistry behind every panel. This project perfectly embodied my mission of bridging the gap between complex technical requirements and meaningful user experiences—proving that even the most specialised products can be made accessible, inspiring, and genuinely useful for the people who need them.
